Project Summary

The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia sought to create a microsite for children under 12 who are experiencing their parents’ divorce or separation. The site is designed to help kids understand what to expect during court proceedings, explain the process in an age-appropriate way, and provide guidance on managing the emotional stress while highlighting the support available to them.

My Contribution

As the lead designer, I was involved throughout the entire website design process—from research and interviews through to creating the final pattern library. I also collaborated closely with the motion animator and video editor to ensure the website design aligned seamlessly with the animation and video styles.

Aligning on Structure

Initially, the client requested a website sitemap and wanted to move straight into the UI design phase once the pages were defined. However, we highlighted the importance of first determining the structure and layout of each page. We proposed creating a combined sitemap and screenflow that not only outlined the site structure but also detailed the components and layouts of each page. This approach proved valuable, as it allowed the client to clearly see the content of every page and refine their requirements before moving into the UI stage.

Interactive & Kid-Friendly UI

In the UI phase, our focus was on creating a design that was both interactive and engaging for children under 12. The challenge was to ensure the site was simple enough for children as young as five to understand, while still appealing to older kids. To achieve this, we kept the language clear and straightforward, added a reader function and glossary for unfamiliar terms, and introduced interactive elements with relatable character designs. These characters were used throughout the site to guide, explain, and educate users in a friendly and accessible way.

Future-Proofing the Design

Once the website page designs were finalized, we created a pattern library to serve as the site’s style guide. This was an important step, as the website will continue to grow with new pages and content over time. The pattern library ensures consistency in style and design, providing a clear framework for future development.
